Newest article to come out on the sequels:
fall
Oct. 21, 2013, 8:15 AM EST
Entertainment Tonight.
Director James Cameron is finally heading back to the world of Pandora, to create the second, third and fourth "Avatar" films, with the plan being to shoot them concurrently, in the way Peter Jackson shot "Lord of the Rings," according to "Avatar" star Sam Worthington.
Bing: 'Avatar' lawsuit dismissed
Worthington was speaking to an Australian radio station when he revealed the plan for filming was to begin this time next year.
According to Variety, Cameron will be working with Josh Friedman, who scripted "War of the Worlds," Rick Jaffa, writer of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," and "Savages" scribe Shane Salerno to write the screenplays for the three "Avatar" sequels.
The current plan is to release "Avatar 2" in December of 2016, and then one new sequel every year through 2018.
According to Worthington and Cameron, the sequels will serve to deepen the world of Pandora, and explore more of the fictional planet's majestic vistas and incredible alien life.

What lawsuit?
Even if there was a real possibility for one, I highly doubt anyone ould beat JC in what he does best

There was a lawsuit by yet another person claiming that they thought of the plot and/or environment first. JC has all his early notes from the 70's to prove his case. He has had several of these suits and won them all.

Won't people ever learn? Or is it about the lawyers always trying to convince them there is a chance to win?

Well, there's lots of money involved... we're talking about several millions of dollars here. Other people play the lottery, those people try a lawsuit against JC.
Personally I think the chances with the lottery would be higher

Irayo, Lrrtoktu, for posting this news about the sequel films.
Yeah, Fall 2014 seems about right for the start time of filming.
As for where the filming will be...I'm guessing Manhattan Beach studio and/or in New Zealand (like for the first film).

Here is a new update on the sequels.
http://movies.msn.com/movies/article.aspx?news=843687
The upcoming three sequels to James Cameron's 2009 sci-fi blockbuster "Avatar" will be filmed in New Zealand, according to the director.
He made the announcement Monday with producer Jon Landau and New Zealand Prime Minister John Key in Wellington, N.Z. The films will be made by Twentieth Century Fox and Camerons Lightstorm Entertainment.
"The 'Avatar" sequels will provide hundreds of jobs and thousands of hours of work directly in the screen sector as well as jobs right across the economy," Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce said in a statement, according to Reuters.
"Avatar" won three Academy Awards and is the highest-grossing film in history, having taken in more than $2.7 billion globally.
Cameron says he plans to complete principal shooting on the three movies at one time, perhaps over a period of about nine months.
New Zealand's government has agreed to a 25 percent financial rebate, up from the current 15 percent. Cameron didn't disclose an exact budget although he says he expects economies of scale will help the three movies together cost less than $1 billion.
He expects the first sequel to be released in 2016.
I do hate that we have to wait so long, but glad they are at least going to do all of them together. I would give just about anything to be on that shoot.

I would know what to do with 1bn budget, lol (methinks, to turn a tropical island in the middle of nowhere into a tropical paradise)

I should hope they did!

Would be a sucky sequel without them...

Ummmm, true, but if they use animatronics, how do we actually know who is acting?

I don't think you could copy them one on one... there still have to be the real people involved to give the characters life.
You just can't computer-animate that Neytiri/Zoe smile

Yay! Glad to hear it!
Now hopefully filming will commence toward the end of this year, if all goes as planned.

The thought occurred to me last night that I wonder how often scripts get leaked. Not that I'd really want that to happen with this, but we'd certainly find out more if it did. I just mention it because I don't know of any that have.
And that article Kiy, it was interesting until I got to the Schwarzenegger bit. That wouldn't be a very good idea.

Yea, Cameron verified that Schwarzenegger wouldn't be in the sequel, but it would be funny as an inside joke if there was an Avatar transport container in the background of one shot with an Avatar in it that looked like Schwarzenegger (assuming the humans are back and we'll be seeing more RDA outposts).

Arrgh, I don't know if this has been posted anywhere else on the forum yet, but Cameron has announced that AVATAR 2 will be pushed back to 2017 because the scripts are taking longer than expected.
http://www.cinemablend.com/new/James-Ca ... 69157.html
I'm a little disappointed in JC for this. He knew back in 2010 that he was doing 3 sequels, and should have started the scripts right away instead of keeping us waiting for so long. But Terminator 2 was released in 1991, seven years after the original Terminator, and it blew everyone away as one of the best sequels of all time. And Cameron did Aliens, a sequel to Alien (1979), in 1986, 7 years after the original. Both sequels were hits. I was hoping that James was sticking to this same formula, which would have had AVATAR 2 released in 2016. Releasing AVATAR 2 in 2017 breaks the previously successful 7 year cycle. What happens if (dare I say it) if he shoots 3 sequels and AVATAR 2 is barely a success? But the other side of that coin is that perhaps 8 years later the general public (the non-Avatards) will embrace AVATAR 2 because it's been so long since the last one, and will be ready for the 3 year onslaught of AVATAR films. But everything James touches turns to gold, and people have always criticized him for his writing, so I guess we can't hold it against him if he wants to take some extra time to do it right and tie all of the films together properly. I'm just thankful that it's James Cameron that we're waiting for sequels from, and not George Lucas.

Hmmm - already that long? Well considering my age I simply might not see the end of it in this life at all. >_>
Is it a bad thing that I am not even waiting anymore? Or is this just a strategy?

All my sentiments exactly.
